When a Brand Changes Hands: The AITO–Huawei Split and China's AI Entity-Lag Problem in 2026

2026/9/24 上午1:13:22

Seres took over AITO's brand marketing from Huawei on Sept 15, 2026. Why Doubao, DeepSeek and Qwen will keep calling it 'Huawei's car', and what that teaches brands planning a China restructuring.

When a Brand Changes Hands: The AITO–Huawei Split and China's AI Entity-Lag Problem in 2026

On September 15, 2026, Huawei and Seres announced the biggest change to the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA, 鸿蒙智行) since it was created. For AITO (问界), product definition, brand marketing, channel retail and after-sales service now sit with Seres. Huawei steps back to a "technology enablement" role and keeps supplying its ADS driver-assistance stack and HarmonyOS cockpit. The other four HIMA brands (Luxeed, Stelato, Maextro and Shangjie) stay under Huawei's lead, according to announcements reported by Sina Finance and Beijing Daily.

Auto analysts are looking at channels and margins. For anyone tracking brand visibility in China's AI assistants, there is a different question: how long will Doubao, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, Wenxin and Hunyuan keep telling users that AITO is "Huawei's car"?

The answer matters well beyond one EV maker. Every international brand in China will go through a restructuring like this at some point: a new distributor, a joint-venture exit, a franchise sold to a local partner, or a licensing deal ending. In a market where answer engines are becoming the first place people look, the gap between what changed on paper and what the model still believes is now a real brand risk.

Five Years of "Huawei 问界" in the Training Corpus

AITO is an extreme case of what we call entity-relationship drift: the corporate facts about a brand change faster than the text AI models learn from.

Here is the public record (Wikipedia summary with primary Chinese sources):

DateEventWhat the text record says
Dec 2021AITO launched at Seres' Chongqing plant"Seres brand, Huawei-assisted"
Mar 2023Store branding briefly changed to "HUAWEI 问界""Huawei's car brand"
Jun 2023Chinese "问界" trademark transferred to Huawei"Huawei owns 问界"
Jul 2024Huawei transfers the AITO trademarks and patents back to Seres for RMB 2.5 billion"Seres owns AITO"
Jan 2026AITO passes 1 million cumulative deliveries in about 46 monthsCoverage framed around Huawei-led HIMA
Sep 15, 2026Seres takes over brand marketing, retail and service"AITO is Seres-led; Huawei supplies technology"

Most of the Chinese-language text about AITO comes from 2023–2025, when deliveries rose from 94,380 (2023) to 386,907 (2024) and coverage leaned heavily on Huawei, and Richard Yu (余承东) in particular. Across Weibo, Zhihu, Dongchedi, Autohome and news syndication, "华为问界" is probably one of the most common ways the brand was written about during its fastest growth.

A language model does not store a timeline. It stores associations weighted by how often they appear. Three years of "Huawei's AITO" will outweigh one week of "Seres-led AITO," however authoritative the new announcement is.

How Each Chinese Model Is Likely to Handle the Change

The six models tracked on GEO Hub differ in how quickly new facts can override old associations. Most of that comes down to whether a model answers from live retrieval or mainly from what it learned in training.

ModelPrimary answer pathExpected lag on the AITO changeWhy
DoubaoSearch-augmented, heavy Douyin/Toutiao ecosystem inputShort for explicit questions, longer in casual recommendationsToutiao-family news covers the change quickly, but Douyin creator content still says "华为问界"
QwenQuark search + Alibaba ecosystemShort to mediumQuark indexes news well; Tmall/Taobao listings may keep old HIMA labels
DeepSeekParametric-first, web search optionalLongestWith search off, answers come from training data dominated by 2023–2025 text
KimiStrong long-context retrievalShort when search runsReads full news articles, so it picks up nuance such as "Huawei still supplies ADS"
Wenxin (ERNIE)Baidu search + BaikeDepends on Baidu BaikeIf Baike's 问界 entry updates, Wenxin follows. If it doesn't, Wenxin repeats the old framing confidently
Hunyuan / YuanbaoWeChat Official Accounts + SogouMediumOfficial Account posts from auto KOLs will take weeks to change their framing

The most important point is that explicit questions and implicit recommendations fail differently. Ask "Who operates AITO now?" and a search-augmented model will probably find the September 15 news. Ask "Which Huawei cars are worth buying under 400,000 yuan?" and many models will still list the AITO M8 and M9 as "Huawei cars," because that query pulls in the old association without any recency signal.

For Seres this is a double bind. Being grouped with "Huawei cars" still brings reflected brand equity, since Huawei's name is a strong demand signal for intelligent driving. But it also means AITO is recommended as a Huawei product rather than on its own positioning, which is exactly what the September restructuring was meant to change.

Why This Matters for International Brands

It is tempting to treat this as a story about domestic EVs. It isn't. International brands in China change their ownership, operating or distribution structure all the time, and each change creates the same drift between announcement and answer:

  • Consumer brands selling control of their China operations to local capital. Food-service and retail brands have been reorganizing China businesses into locally led joint ventures. Afterwards, users ask AI assistants who runs the brand, whether prices or quality will change, and whether membership points carry over. If the model's answer mixes old and new operator facts, it creates confusion the brand never intended.
  • Automotive JV restructurings. Foreign carmakers adjusting their Chinese joint ventures face the same corpus problem as AITO, with years of "X-brand made by Y joint venture" in training data.
  • Distributor and cross-border channel changes. A beauty or luxury brand that moves from a third-party importer to a direct Tmall flagship will find AI assistants recommending the old channel for months. That sends high-intent buyers to grey-market or discontinued listings.
  • Licensing exits. When a fashion or lifestyle license held by a local partner ends, AI models keep describing the licensee's products as the brand's, including products the brand no longer stands behind.

We have covered pieces of this before: recency decay, model version churn, and the "three Baike" entity-consensus problem. A corporate restructuring brings all three together at once, on a known date, under full public attention.

The Scale of the Audience Hearing the Old Answer

This is not a niche issue. According to figures reported by Sina Tech, Doubao alone had about 226 million monthly active users in early 2026, with DeepSeek at around 135 million. Q1 2026 reporting from NBD put the combined (non-deduplicated) MAU of China's top five AI apps at 722 million. Car buying is one of the most research-heavy purchases a Chinese consumer makes, and AI assistants are now a normal early step in it.

If even a small share of those users ask about premium intelligent SUVs in the fourth quarter, which is peak season for Chinese auto sales, the "Huawei's AITO" framing will reach millions of purchase-stage conversations before the corpus catches up.

A Restructuring GEO Playbook

Based on how Chinese models pick up and weigh sources, here is how we would run the AI-visibility side of any brand restructuring, whether you are Seres this week or an international brand planning a China JV change next year.

1. Rewrite the entity records before the announcement, not after. Baidu Baike, Hudong/Kuaidong Baike and Sogou Baike entries should be ready to update on announcement day. Wenxin and Hunyuan lean heavily on these, and an outdated Baike entry will override your press release.

2. Publish one canonical "who we are now" page and make it easy to cite. It should cover the date, the new operator, what hasn't changed (warranties, membership, service) and what has. Use plain, declarative Chinese sentences a model can lift directly, such as "自2026年9月15日起,问界品牌的产品定义、品牌营销、渠道零售及服务体系由赛力斯主导。"

3. Put the new relationship in the places that feed recommendations, not just news. News updates answers to explicit questions. Recommendation answers are shaped by reviews, comparison posts, Xiaohongshu notes, Dongchedi Q&A threads and e-commerce listings. That is where the old label survives. Brief your KOLs and dealer content teams on the new framing.

4. Keep the relationship you still want. AITO does not want to lose "Huawei ADS" and "HarmonyOS cockpit." It wants those treated as features rather than ownership. Write content that separates the two: "AITO, operated by Seres, equipped with Huawei ADS." Models are good at copying clear relational phrasing.

5. Test explicit and implicit queries separately, every week, across all six models. Track at least three query types: identity ("谁在运营问界"), recommendation ("华为系30-40万SUV推荐"), and service ("问界售后找谁"). Look at DeepSeek with search off as the worst case, because it shows what the model's built-in knowledge still believes.

6. Expect a half-life, not a switch. From what we've seen in earlier entity changes, search-augmented models usually reflect a well-publicized change in explicit queries within weeks. Parametric knowledge and recommendation-style answers can lag until the next major training cycle. Plan the monitoring budget for at least two model release cycles.

Takeaway for Brand Marketers

The AITO–Huawei restructuring shows plainly that changing the org chart does not change the answer. In China's AI assistants, a brand's corporate identity is whatever years of accumulated text say it is, and one announcement does not rewrite that.

If your brand has an ownership, JV, distribution or licensing change coming in China, treat AI visibility as its own workstream in the transition plan:

  • Update Baike and other entity sources on day one.
  • Publish a canonical, easy-to-quote explanation of the new structure.
  • Reach the review and recommendation layer, not just the newswire.
  • Monitor identity, recommendation and service queries separately across Doubao, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, Wenxin and Hunyuan until the old framing is gone.

The brands that handle this well will have their new story told correctly by the assistants that consumers now consult before buying. The rest will spend the next year having their old story repeated back to them.
