Doubao vs Kimi vs Tongyi: Which Chinese AI Will Mention Your Brand?

2026/5/29 上午8:00:00

The same brand query, eight different AI platforms, dramatically different results. After testing hundreds of brands across China's major AI models, here's what drives the recommendation gap — and what you can do about it.

The Puzzle Every China-Focused Brand Manager Faces

You ask Doubao: "Which premium tea brands are worth recommending in Shanghai?" Your brand appears, confidently described, near the top of the response.

You ask Kimi the same question. Your brand doesn't appear at all.

Same query. Same brand. Completely different result. Why?

This isn't a glitch or an editorial bias — it's a structural feature of how different AI platforms are built. Each of China's major AI models has distinct training data sources, update cycles, and recommendation logic. Understanding these differences is now a core competency for any brand operating in the Chinese market.

We ran standardized brand visibility tests across eight major AI platforms, covering brands across multiple industries and recognition tiers. Here's what the data shows.

The 8 Platforms, Decoded

Doubao (ByteDance)

Doubao is deeply integrated with ByteDance's ecosystem — Douyin (TikTok China), Toutiao, and affiliated content networks. This means it has exceptional coverage of brands that have built meaningful presence through short video and influencer partnerships.

Best for: Consumer brands, food & beverage, beauty, fashion — particularly those active on Douyin. If a brand has strong short-video metrics, Doubao's recognition accuracy is noticeably higher than competitors.

Weaker at: B2B brands that don't prioritize short video content.

Kimi (Moonshot AI)

Kimi's training data skews toward long-form web content — news media, vertical publications, forums, and in-depth editorial. It is particularly good at discovering brands that have earned coverage in industry publications.

Best for: Brands with rich editorial coverage — founder narratives, industry award recognition, in-depth product reviews in trade media.

Weaker at: Brands whose visibility is primarily UGC-driven (Dianping reviews, Xiaohongshu posts).

Tongyi Qianwen (Alibaba)

Deep integration with Alibaba's commerce ecosystem — Taobao, Tmall, Amap, Koubei — makes Tongyi particularly accurate for brands with established e-commerce footprints. Its commercial data density is the highest of any platform we tested.

Best for: E-commerce brands; any brand with a Tmall flagship store. Tongyi's accuracy rate for brands with strong Tmall presence exceeded 85% in our testing.

Weaker at: Offline-first businesses with limited digital commerce footprint.

Wenxin / ERNIE Bot (Baidu)

Baidu's deep integration with Baidu Baike (Chinese Wikipedia), Baidu Zhidao, and Baijiahao means brands with Baidu Baike entries are almost guaranteed to be recognized accurately.

Best for: Established brands; traditional industries; any brand that has invested in Baidu's publishing ecosystem.

Weaker at: Emerging brands and DTC-native companies that haven't built presence in Baidu's properties.

Yuanbao (Tencent)

Yuanbao draws heavily from WeChat's ecosystem — Official Accounts, Video Channel, WeChat Search. Brands with consistent WeChat Official Account publishing have a structural advantage here.

Best for: B2B and professional service brands; healthcare; education.

Weaker at: Gen-Z consumer brands whose primary content lives on Douyin and Xiaohongshu.

DeepSeek

DeepSeek's training skews toward open web content with technical depth. It has exceptional coverage of technology brands and industrial companies.

Best for: B2B tech, industrial, pharmaceutical, and research-adjacent brands.

Weaker at: Consumer brands without substantial text-based content.

ChatGPT and Gemini

Both models are English-internet-dominant by training. For brands operating exclusively in the domestic Chinese market with no English-language presence, recognition rates are dramatically lower compared to Chinese-native platforms.

The Data Gap: Chinese Models vs. Global Models

Brand TypeChinese AI Avg. Mention RateGlobal AI Avg. Mention RateGap
Major consumer brands82%63%+19%
Mid-size chain restaurants71%34%+37%
Local service brands48%12%+36%
B2B tech brands55%41%+14%
Emerging DTC brands39%8%+31%

For brands targeting Chinese users, the ROI of optimizing Chinese-native AI platforms is dramatically higher than optimizing for global models.

Platform Prioritization: A Practical Framework

Consumer / F&B / Beauty brands: Prioritize Doubao and Tongyi. Invest in Douyin content density and Tmall brand data completeness.

Local services / Hotels / Retail: Prioritize Kimi and Wenxin. Publish depth content in local media; claim your Baidu Baike entry.

B2B / Enterprise services: Prioritize Yuanbao and DeepSeek. Maintain regular WeChat Official Account publishing; ensure whitepapers have public, crawlable URLs.

Brands with international ambitions: After stabilizing Chinese-native platform presence, build English-language assets and complete Google Business Profile to close the ChatGPT/Gemini gap.

The Strategic Takeaway

You don't need to optimize all eight platforms simultaneously. The right move is to identify where your target customers are asking AI questions, build dominant presence there first, and expand systematically.

But you cannot make any of these decisions without knowing your current baseline. A brand that assumes it's visible because it has a strong Douyin presence may be completely invisible on Kimi — where a different segment of its customers is asking questions.
